Sunday Highlight: August 11, 2024
Isn’t it great that we have so many missionaries serving in so many places around the world — and that our church is part of it? Colombia is a country that sits right on top of South America. About 50 million people live there. There are large cities but a third of the country is jungle. To share the gospel in so many places is a big challenge.
One cause for joy is that the number of Baptist churches continues to increase — Colombian Baptists now train and send out their own missionaries. This background helps us understand the ministry of our missionary, April Byron. Our church supports her through our Cooperative Program giving.
April serves in Bogotá, the huge capital city. It’s the center of about everything, including medicine. People from across the country come to Bogotá for treatment. The government provides basic shelter where patients live for a few days or longer as they are treated.
April visits those shelters and gets to meet people from all over Colombia — even small, isolated jungle villages. She works with Salomé (say sal-oh-may), a Colombian Baptist missionary partner.
They visit the patients and hand out soap, shampoo, baby formula and other basic things that are often needed. The missionaries get to pray for the people and share the gospel.
Let’s pray for April — and Salomé — as they share Jesus with people from all over Colombia.
