Sunday Highlight: August 18, 2024
For our missions prayer time today, let’s focus our attention on Portland, Ore. We know that there are relatively few New Testament churches in the Pacific Northwest, specifically Oregon and Washington. Lostness is high. Planting new churches is not easy.
That’s why we especially want to pray for our missionaries, Vergil and Kelsey Brown, who we support through our church’s Cooperative Program giving.
The Browns are not beginners: They already successfully planted a new church in Portland.
Their second plant is called Redemption Church. It meets in north Portland, just south of the airport. Vergil says Christianity is an unknown thing to the people in his neighborhood. They do ask questions, which Vergil and Kelsey answer with biblical truth.
Redemption Church already has a good core of leaders. To reach more people, they volunteer at a local rescue mission and host community events like block parties, Vacation Bible Schools, and yard sales.
The city of Portland has been torn by political strife, violence, and rampant crime in recent years. Only the gospel can bring the peace that’s needed there.
We thank God for the faithful service of Vergil and Kelsey as they plant a second new church that’s so desperately needed. Let’s ask the Lord to keep them safe and empower them to help bring many to Jesus.
